In cricket, scoring a century, especially in the Test format is one of the most prestigious and challenging milestones for any batter. It requires patience and concentration. While many have gone on to score hundreds in both innings of a Test, some have fallen heartbreakingly short of the mark, dismissed on 99, which is considered among the unluckiest score to be getting out for a batter.

Losing one’s wicket just one run away from a Test century can be devastating, both emotionally and mentally, for the player, and remains etched in the memory of fans as well. Today, has a look at three of the most recent batters who suffered this dismissal on 99 in international cricket:

Last 3 players to be dismissed for 99 in Test cricket

1. Harry Brook vs India, Leeds, 2025

England’s middle-order batsman Harry Brook fell short of a well-deserved century in the first Test against India at Headingley, Leeds. Prasidh Krishna dismissed Brook for 99 from 112 balls. His knock included 11 boundaries and two sixes, and it helped reduce the gap against a strong Indian bowling attack.

Brook, however, mistimed a hook shot off a short delivery and found Shardul Thakur at deep backward square leg, who easily completed the catch.

2. Rishabh Pant vs New Zealand, Bengaluru, 2024

Rishabh Pant fell just short of a century in the first Test against New Zealand at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. He is noted for his aggressive stroke play, and he was rebuilding India’s innings alongside Sarfaraz Khan following a disappointing performance in his earlier innings in the same match.

He was on the verge of a match-defining tonne when pacer Will O’Rourke delivered with extra bounce. He tried a cut shot, but the ball hit his stumps and he was out for 99. The dismissal was a low point in an otherwise valiant innings. This was also Pant’s eighth dismissal in his nineties, the most for a wicketkeeper-batter in any format.

3. Travis Head vs West Indies, Perth, 2022

Travis Head, Australia’s left-hander, suffered a same fate in the first Test against the West Indies in Perth in November 2022. Head was batting energetically, reaching 99 off 95 deliveries with 11 fours and looking poised for a quick century. However, in a slip of focus, he sliced a delivery from part-time off-spinner Kraigg Brathwaite onto his stumps via a bottom edge. While Australia was already leading the scoreboard, the dismissal left Head upset, as he walked back one run short of a milestone.
