Georgia Voll, Ellyse Perry, Alana King, and Kim Garth helped Australia win the series 2-0 over the West Indies despite Hayley Matthews’ remarkable half-century at Kingstown.
Australia’s 164 for 5 was supported by Voll’s scorching 39 from 23 and Perry’s elegant 42 from 28. The score was the same as in the first game, but it was achieved in a very different way. Voll hit six boundaries and a six during a vicious powerplay assault before the West Indies bowlers pulled Australia back in the second half of the innings. While the West Indies bowlers shared five scalps, Phoebe Litchfield also scored 35 off 29. However, Chinelle Henry was injured in her left hand while fielding in her follow-through.
Australia’s triumph was made possible by Garth’s opening delivery, which included a maiden. Matthews battled to 1 off 12 before eventually breaking free to make 56 from 41, giving the West Indies hope of scoring 75 from the final 48 balls with nine wickets remaining. However, King put an end to such dreams by winning the player of the match award and finishing with 2 for 25 after picking up Matthews and Stafanie Taylor.
Garth should have had more credit for her brilliant 0 for 20 from four overs, but Deandra Dottin finished with 39 not out from 28 thanks to a late wasted opportunity off her bowling, reducing the gap to 17 runs when it was supposed to be much higher.
Sophie Molineux, who carried a back injury into the tour and did neither bowl or bat in either game, won her first series as captain. Ashleigh Gardner was also sidelined by hamstring pain prior to the game for Australia.
Voll came out of nowhere. Within the first two overs, the rope was hit by two strong draw shots and two brilliant drives off both feet. Beyond the scoreboard, she also dealt greater damage. As Henry attempted to field in her follow-through, a vicious off-drive injured her left hand. The all-rounder didn’t bat after leaving the pitch after bowling just two overs.
Voll continued, slog sweeping Karishma Ramharack for six before giving her a hard thud. However, she miscued Ramharack to mid-on when she attempted to go again off the final ball of the powerplay, ending her innings. Despite Beth Mooney’s failure to score more than a run per ball on the powerplay for the sixth consecutive Twenty20 International this year, Australia managed to score 54 for 1 in the opening six.
Voll’s fireworks caused Australia’s innings to stall. Afy Fletcher’s superb bowling tricked Mooney. With drift and drop, the legspinner celebrated taking her 100th T20I wicket in style. Mooney was bowled after being hit in flight by a wild swipe.
Perry and Litchfield shared a 58-run partnership, but it lacked fluency. Perry handled the majority of the hard lifting as she found the boundary six times, including two lovely strikes over and through cover, while Litchfield struggled with timing. The fact that Jannillea Glasgow dropped her at mid-off on 21 did help her. But with Perry and Litchfield both holing out, Australia managed just 39 runs in the final 30 balls of the innings. In the final three overs, Dottin and Jahzara Claxton finished well with the ball, but Nicola Carey was the only batter to find the rope twice.
Compared to Australia, the West Indies’ powerplay was terrible, scoring just 26 for 1. With a maiden to Matthews and another over that cost just three runs, Garth was outstanding. When the West Indies’ batters weren’t running, two unnecessary wild throws lost two runs, therefore it should have been one. Qiana Joseph was run out while attempting a simple single, therefore her rushing was costly.
It was perplexing because Matthews had no intention at first. Before she slog swept King for six, she scored just one from her first twelve balls and seldom played a shot out of rage. With four out, Matthews took more chances and went on a rampage after the fielding limits were lifted. Carey gave Matthews another six after dropping a catch on the rope. With nine wickets remaining, she lowered the equation to just 75 needed off 48 balls after hitting seven boundaries and two sixes to achieve her half-century off 38 balls.
King’s class shines once more.
After taking King for 19 in the first two overs, Matthews miscued to mid-off in the thirteenth over, giving King her retribution. West Indies’ pursuit was ruined as she used her magic to take 2 for 7 in her final two overs. Taylor was stumped by a wide margin after running past a masterfully bowled leg break. Shemaine Campbelle was added to Georgia Wareham’s problems before Garth came back to seal the deal. Dottin skied a slower ball straight up, but Mooney missed it in the wind, and she deserved the wicket. However, in the last over, Dottin failed to sufficiently clear the rope.
